Legato Systems, Inc.

Legato, headquartered in Palo Alto, California, was founded in 1988 to provide an integrated set of storage management services that simplify the administration of client/server computing.

Legato Systems Inc. is the leading provider of network-wide data storage management software. Our goal is to simplify administration by providing a family of scalable storage management software products that deliver the right solution at the right price.

Our software removes the barriers associated with today's utility-based backup solutions designed for specific operating system environments. Such solutions result in isolated islands of incompatible media libraries that prevent network expansion and greatly increase backup administration costs.

Legato's Products

Protecting and managing network data is accomplished differently in almost every organization. Therefore, products need to be flexible enough to support a variety of environments and functionality requirements. To meet these varied situations, Legato has structured its products to support dedicated server environments (with no client support) and multiple network servers and desktops.

Standalone Server Backup

Data Backup Utility
The Legato Data Backup Utility (LDBU) provides easy-to-use, feature-rich backup for standalone systems. The LDBU is currently available for NetWare and Windows NT servers, offering a superior alternative to traditional backup utilities for just a nominal shipping and handling fee.

Automated Server Backup

Staccato
Staccato delivers reliable server backup and recovery but approaches the task with a much greater degree of automation. Staccato can run virtually unattended for months at a time--a "zero intervention" network backup product. This automation is made possible through the use of low-cost autoloader technology, so that backup automation is affordable for even the smallest LANs.

Multiple Server Networks

Storage Management
Legato NetWorker is the first high performance network storage management application for three key networking environments -- NetWare, multiple Unix operating systems, and a mixture of the two -- and unifies these platforms under a single, interoperable, centrally-managed architecture. Data is written to NetWorker's OpenTape format which is a de-facto standard tape format that is supported by over thirty vendors of data storage management products.

When customers purchase NetWorker, they have purchased a scalable storage management server that can be configured for network backup, recovery, archival, and file migration services. NetWorker is scalable for any size network. Server operating systems supported by NetWorker include Novell NetWare, SunOS and Solaris, IBM AIX/6000, SCO UNIX, and those from 14 Legato OEMs.

NetWorker also provides protection for desktop systems with client software for DOS/Windows, NT, OS/2, Macintosh, UnixWare, SCO Unix, Sun Solaris, SunOS, IBM AIX/6000, Sun 3, HP-UX, IBM LAN Server, Digital VAX, Digital ULTRIX, MIPS, Silicon Graphics, and Sony systems.

NetWorker for NetWare
NetWorker for NetWare is a NetWare Loadable Module (NLM). Its Microsoft Windows-based interface eases the task of protecting data for single NetWare servers or multiple NetWare servers supporting hundreds of gigabytes of data.

NetWorker for NetWare completely and reliably backs up and restores all data, including bindery or directory files, extended file attributes, and security information for NetWare 3 and 4 file servers and connected desktops. It is fully compliant with Novell Storage Management Services (SMS) which ensures complete compatibility with NetWare - now and in the future - and reliably protects all data residing on the network.

NetWorker for Unix
NetWorker for Unix is the de-facto standard for powerful, enterprise-strength network data storage management. It supports the following backup servers from Legato - Sun Solaris, IBM AIX/6000, HP-UX, and SCO UNIX - plus multiple Unix implementations by OEM partners. NetWorker reliably protects all network data, inlcuding data resident on networked systems running Unix, NT, NetWare, DOS/Windows, Macintosh, OS/2 and more.

NetWorker for Windows NT
NetWorker for Windows NT is the first native WIndows NT server-based enterprise storage management application designed specifically for protecting mission-critical data and applications on Windows NT workgroups and mixed-platform enterprises. NetWorker for Windows NT sets a new standard for protecting data on Windows NT application servers and workstations, combining mainframe-class network storage management with superior Windows NT integration.

NetWorker Options

NetWorker Archive
NetWorker Archive provides automated and permanent protection of specific files or groups of files according to rules set by the administrator or user.

Autochanger Software Modules
Autoloader Software Modules deliver hands-free automation via the industry's most popular robotic autochangers.

ClientPaks
ClientPaks deliver data protection to local hard disks of desktops, workstations, and servers networked to a centralized storage management server.

Mainframe Extension
The mainframe extension delivers LAN to mainframe backup for the purpose of setting up a centralized data warehouse.

SNMP Module
The SNMP Module integrates NetWorker for Unix's storage management services with HP OpenView Network Node Manager and SunNet Manager, allowing for a single point of focus to monitor, configure and control various aspects of the network.

Database Support
Legato offers several solutions for protecting Unix databases.

For Informix and smaller Oracle7 databases, Legato's Professional Services Department offers low cost, highly automated toolkits.

For larger Oracle7 databases, the new NetWorker Database Module for Oracle provides high-performance, on-line backup of mission-critical databases. NetWorker Database Modules for Informix, Sybase, Microsoft SQL server and other popular databases will be offered in the future.

Future Product Direction

Legato Systems will deliver a variety of modular, advanced data management tools that can be easily integrated into any NetWorker installation at any time. This comprehensive, cross-platform approach will deliver the first truly, enterprise-wide solution for network data protection and storage management. The focus for these products will be in the following areas:

Hierarchical Storage Management. Data staging and migration to the most appropriate and cost-effective storage media based upon file usage, file type or high water marks.
